Are nail salon UV lamps a skin cancer risk?

"Are nail salon UV lamps a skin cancer risk?" Photograph. foxnews. foxnews. 1. May. 2014. Web. 4. May.2014. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/05/01/are-nail-salon-uv-lamps-skin-cancer-risk/?intcmp=obnetwork

Many nail salons use ultraviolet lamps to dry nails. They use the same hazardous rays as a tanning beds. A new study shows that it would take many manicure for these lamps to cause damage. Researchers calculated that it would take eight to 208 visits to damage skin cells in a way to raise the cancer risk. It depend the type of machine.

This event relates to my biology class that I took last year. In biology, we learned a little about what cancer is and the treatment that most people have to go through. I feel that this event is kind of scary in a way since I like to get my nails done. I've dried my nails in an ultraviolet lamp before and it's crazy how this can raise your risk of getting cancer. This event affects me greatly because I like to get my nails done once in a while. Now that I know that these lamps can raise the risk of cancer, I'm more cautious of not getting my nails done a lot.

How does the author support his claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author supports his claim by using many quotes from trustworthy people to defend his position. He used quotes that scientists and researchers said about this subject. The author does think ultraviolet lamp raises cancer risk. He thinks that manicurist that use the lamp daily "may be exposed to an abundance of UV-A radiation, much more than the average customer" (FoxNews). Many people might think that the risk of getting cancer from the lamps are low, but the author let people know that "Shipp's team endorsed the idea of wearing sunscreen to protect hands from UV damage" (FoxNews). The author shows his concerns that these lamps might cause cancer and even if the risk is low, people should still have caution.

Tom Sermanni Fired as Head Coach of US Women's National Team

Goldberg, Rob. "Tom Sermanni Fired as Head Coach of US Women's National Team." Photograph. CNN. CNN. 6. April.2014. Web. 7. April. 2014. <http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2019756-tom-sermanni-fired-as-head-coach-of-us-womens-national-team?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial&hpt=hp_t2>

Although there was a win in his last match, Tom Sermanni was removed as head coach of the U.S. women's national soccer team. Soccer analyst, Ives Galarcept, said that Sermanni was expecting to be part of the future. Whoever the next coach is will have pleasure to become the next coach of the team. The next coach will have only one year to prepare for the World Cup. The next coach will have brief time to do a new method and find the best way to win.

This event doesn't really have to do with any of my classes. The only class I can think that this article relates to is gym. I took gym in my freshman year and I think this article relates to gym because it's a sport. This sport keeps people fit. I feel that this event doesn't affect me. I think it would affect the people that love soccer. Since the soccer team is having a new coach, it's going to affect them greatly. They're probably going to do more techniques or do things differently than what they did when their old coach used to train them.

What is the central idea of the passage and how is it developed and refined throughout the selection? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The central idea of this passage is to inform readers that the head coach of the national soccer team was fired. Throughout the passage, the author uses a few quotes to demonstrate that people had different opinions on this topic. The author let the reader know that Ives Galarcept stated that "Sermanni was handling #USWNT job like a coach who fully expected to be around, experimenting w/players & formations year before World Cup." Many people where surprised that he was fired. As the quote said, even the coach expected to be around in the future. The fact that Ives Galarcept said that Sermanni was experimenting with players and formation year before the World Cup makes readers think he might of been a good coach. Galacept took the time to describe reasons that many people didn't think this was going to happen.  Many people were glad that he was fired. Steven Goff pointed out that Sermanni offered "no direction, no vision, nothing." I guess many people thought that it was time for a new coach. The methods that this coach was using apparently weren't wroking since some people were dissattisfied.  The author wanted to show the reader the diffent opinions that people had about Sermanni being fired.

"Teen killed, another injured after being hit by train while walking to school dance." Photograph. FoxNews. FoxNews. 22. March. 2014. Web. 23. March. 2013. <http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/03/22/teen-killed-another-injured-after-being-hit-by-train-while-walking-to-school/?intcmp=latestnews>

A teenage boy is dead and a teenage girl is critically injured after they were hit by a train. They were on their way to a high school dance in Northern California when they got hit. The train engineer told a witness that the victims had not acknowledged him. The people that were at the game near the incident, said they heard an unusual long blowing of the train's horn. The boy died at the scene and the girl was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

This event doesn't relate to any of my classes. The only class I can think of is U.S history because we were talking about trains last week. I feel that this event is horrible. I think that those kids should have been accompanied by an adult. Their parents should have at least taken them to the dance. This event affects me because it makes me more aware of things that are going on around me. I don't know how these two kids got hit by a train. A train is very loud. You can hear it from far away. That makes me realize that you need to be aware of surroundings because you never know what can happen.

What is the purpose for using [statistics/quotations/headings/bullets/personal experience. Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The purpose of using quotation in the passage helps the credibility of the article. The author uses quotes from witnesses of this event. The train engineer said, "(The victims) didn't acknowledge me." This quote shows credibility because that's the train engineer that was part of the accident and that is what he had said. The author used another quote from a witness named Richard Avila who was near the event when it happened. The witness said, "(The train) honked from so far back there." These witnesses where near the train when the incident occurred, so what they say is more accurate since they were there. The author also proves a point with using quotations of witnesses. Most of the quotation the author uses defends the train engineer. All the quotes explain how the train tried to warn the children to get out the way, but the children didn't listen.

Starbucks ‘toilet water’ coffee brews up controversy

Van Sant, Ashley,
"Starbucks ‘toilet water’ coffee brews up controversy." Photograph. q13fox. fox. 31. May. 2013. Web. 10. March. 2014. <http://q13fox.com/2013/05/31/starbucks-toilet-water-coffee-brews-up-controversy/#axzz2vCNpiDcc>.

A Starbucks in Hong Kong was brewing their coffee with water from a bathroom. On the website, it was reported that the Starbucks employees got the water from a wall-mounted faucet just feet away from the urinal. It turns out that the bathroom wasn't even in the Starbucks. It was in a neighboring garage where workers had to carry the water back and forth. Employees said it was the closest water supply. Health officials found out and issued a warning. The Hong Kong store now uses distilled water.

This article doesn't really connect to any of my classes. The only class that relates to this article is Civics and Economics. In Civics and Economics, we learned about a few different businesses and how to save money. I think that the Starbucks in Hong Kong used the wall-mounted faucet because it was a easier solution and they didn't have to waste on anything to be able to get clean water. If it weren't for the health officials finding out, they would probably still be using the faucet.

I think that this event is gross. They used a faucet that was feet away from a urinal. This affects me greatly because I love to go to Starbucks for coffee. Although, this happened in Hong Kong, it makes me wonder if the Starbucks that I usually go to is sanitary.

How does the author use language to advance her point of view? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
I think the author of the article doesn't really try to prove a point. She just states what happened. "A Starbucks in Hong Kong is apologizing for brewing their coffee with water from a bathroom, according to MSN.com."(Sant). This sentence is just stating what happened. "Employees said it was their closet water supply. (Sant). The author stated the reason that caused them to get water out of a faucet. At the end of the article, the author says, "The website reported that the Hong Kong store now uses distilled water." This evidence proves that the author didn't really try to show the reader what she felt about this event. She just said what happened. The author didn't even try to describe what she felt at the end of the article. But, I did notice that the author used some strong words in her sentences. For example, she used the word "apologized" in the first sentence I used as evidence. This made me feel like the author didn't feel gross about this event because she understood the reason why they did it. In the second sentence she stated the reason why they did this. She tried to prove to the reader that they did this because they didn't have no other close water supply. That they didn't have much options. Then at the end, she says that they're using distilled water now. Which means they corrected their mistake. Although the author didn't prove her point clearly, I think she understood the reason why the Starbucks in Hong Kong did this.

New York senior citizen banned from mall after untimely bathroom break

Andy. "no trespassing sign." Photograph. Flickr. Yahoo. 22. July. 2008. Web. 20. Feb. 2014. <https://www.flickr.com/photos/14168332@N07/2692659002/sizes/l/>

A 73-year-old man that lives in New York, was banned from a Long Island Mall. He was cited for trespassing when he tried to use the bathroom before the mall was open. The 73-year-old  man, Anthony Arcese, joins a group of senior citizens to walk laps at the Westfield South Shore Mall to do exercise in the cold days. That's the place where the group gets together to socialize after walking a 3-mile walk. Arcese can't go nowhere near the mall  and will not be able to join the group until July 15.

This event doesn't relate to any of my classes. The only class I think it can sort of relate to is civics and economics. In civics and economics, we learned about many different laws and court cases. This relates to Arcese because he actually went to court for trespassing. It's important to know your rights and the different types of laws, so you can find a way to defend yourself. They actually banned him from going to mall for a few months. I think this event is unbelievable. The poor old man wanted to use the bathroom. It’s not like he was walking around the mall and doing something bad. I think they should have at least given him a warning to not do that again, instead of banning him from the mall. This event doesn't really affect me. It just lets me know to not try to use the bathroom in a place that hasn't opened yet. This event can happen to anyone.

What is the author’s point of view, and how does it impact the overall effect of the text? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author thinks that this event was ridiculous because instead of using evidence to make readers understand that this event was right, he uses evidence to show that this event was wrong. The author states that, “The management team did not respond to 1010 WINS for its report. One member of Arcese's group called the ban ridiculous” (FoxNews). The author used this evidence to prove that many other people thought it was wrong. The old man’s punishment was too severe for what he did.  The author also said “You think kids get bullied? Well, unbelievable or not, old people get bullied," (FoxNews). The author uses this quote to let people know that senior citizens get bullied too. Arcese was just a man that wanted to use the bathroom and got punished for using it at the wrong time. These quotes prove that Arcese should not have gotten banned from the mall. He did something that just deserved a warning. They exaggerated with his punishment. Not only kids get punished for using the bathroom at the wrong time.

Ohio girl's email cry for help leads to rescue, arrests

Nedermeijer, Marco. "children." Photograph. Flickr. Yahoo. 20. June. 2007. Web. 13. Feb. 2014. <http://www.flickr.com/photos/mnedermeijer/575507023/>

In Cincinnati, there were children that were rescued by a sister's email asking for help to a teacher after they were beaten and tied to their bed. This email led the teacher to call 911. After the investigation with the police and the children services authorities, they arrested the girl's mother, grandmother and grandmother. The 44 year old man was charged with raping his stepdaughters, 9 and 11, and abusing their 8 year old brother, said the police. The children later told the authorities that they were tied with ropes and chains for weeks, and only sometimes were untied to do homework. They were forced to take their clothes off to be hit with belts and paddles. They had marks and scars as evidence. The children said that they were sometime allowed to eat and that they were really hungry. The authorities said that they didn't look overly malnourished.  The children's father denied the accusations and the other adults said it was punishment for stealing food.
This article doesn't really connect with one of my classes. The only class I can think of is my English class. I think this article connects with my English class because Ms. Payseur talked about an event that was happening to the kids in Africa. They were torturing these kids because they thought they were witches. My event and the one in Africa connect because they're about innocent children getting tortured and these events are happening around the world.

I feel that this event is wrong. Children's shouldn't be tortured. If children are bad, there are punishments or ways that they can learn not to be bad; that doesn't involve beaten their children and leaving scars and marks on them. This affects me because there are many kids around me that are passing through the same situation. If it weren't for the girl that contacted her teacher, these children would still be stuck in this situation, and people around them wouldn't even know it.

How does the structure of the text refine and support the author’s claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer. The passage first starts off with a little summary about the event, then the author tells the readers about the event step by step since the beginning.  The author uses many quotes to support his claim.  In the beginning, the author talked about how the children were tortured and all the investigation. "I'm sure like most kids she trusted in her teacher that she would get her help,"(Associated Press) The author stated the quote and said the possibility of why the girl emailed her teacher. "We don't know if the opportunity was there that maybe no adults were around. Or maybe she just had enough." (Associated Press) Then, the author spoke about the school administration. "Our teachers are extraordinarily dedicated, highly trained, and have special relationships with their students." (Associated Press) Lastly, the author stated how the children are doing now. "They're getting to eat now. They have loving people around them," (Associated Press)

Ex-student calls teacher over alleged sex abuse, posts talk on YouTube

Sarah. "depressed." Photograph. Flickr. Yahoo. 26. May. 2009. Web. 24. Jan. 2014 <http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarahvdl5/517705731/>

This article is about a women named Jamie that lives in California. She is 28 years old. She says that her female teacher from middle school used to abuse her for years. After more than a decade, she had build enough courage to report her teacher. She found out that the statute of limitation was up and that her old middle school teacher would never pay for what she had done to her. So she decided to do a video of her calling her old middle school teacher. She talked to the women and basically made her confess that she did abuse her. She put the video on YouTube to expose her. After a few hours the women quit her job. Officials asked why she had waited so long to report this teacher. Jamie said that she did this because she became a mother. She started thinking of what had happened to her. She wanted to protect other kids, so they wouldn't have to go through everything that she went through. She didn't want that teacher being around other kids anymore.

I think that this article does a connection with Mr. Paul's class. Last year, we had a project, that we had to research about a big problem that has been happening around the world. I think that this is a serious problem that has been happening a lot. When I watch the news, I hear a lot about kids saying that their teachers have abused them and many teachers going to jail.

I feel that this event is piteous. It's sad that there are many kids that get abused by their teachers. Teacher are the ones who are supposed to help you when you need help in a situation. I think that even though the statute of limitation was up, they should still do something about it. They should at least make sure that teacher isn't around other kids again. They should give her a punishment for what she did because if she did that to Jamie, she probably did it with other students also. This affects me because I am still in school. You never know who can be going through what Jamie did. It has came on the news that teachers have even abused 12 year olds. So apparently, age doesn't matter.

How does the author support his claim? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.
The author supports his claim by using quotes of the conversation that Jamie had with her middle school teacher in the video. Through out the passage, the author provides many details about the event and uses many quotes that Jamie said to support her details. The author also posted the video, so you can see it. For example, in the article, the author said that Jamie's middle school teacher had brainwashed her. That's why she never reported her. The author used this example to prove her point: "She said that she would kill herself if I ever left. And I believed that," Jamie said.
