A 73-year-old man that lives in New York, was banned from a Long Island Mall. He was cited for trespassing when he tried to use the bathroom before the mall was open. The 73-year-old  man, Anthony Arcese, joins a group of senior citizens to walk laps at the Westfield South Shore Mall to do exercise in the cold days. That's the place where the group gets together to socialize after walking a 3-mile walk. Arcese can't go nowhere near the mall  and will not be able to join the group until July 15.

This event doesn't relate to any of my classes. The only class I think it can sort of relate to is civics and economics. In civics and economics, we learned about many different laws and court cases. This relates to Arcese because he actually went to court for trespassing. It's important to know your rights and the different types of laws, so you can find a way to defend yourself. They actually banned him from going to mall for a few months. I think this event is unbelievable. The poor old man wanted to use the bathroom. It’s not like he was walking around the mall and doing something bad. I think they should have at least given him a warning to not do that again, instead of banning him from the mall. This event doesn't really affect me. It just lets me know to not try to use the bathroom in a place that hasn't opened yet. This event can happen to anyone.

What is the author’s point of view, and how does it impact the overall effect of the text? Use evidence from the selection to support your answer.

The author thinks that this event was ridiculous because instead of using evidence to make readers understand that this event was right, he uses evidence to show that this event was wrong. The author states that, “The management team did not respond to 1010 WINS for its report. One member of Arcese's group called the ban ridiculous” (FoxNews). The author used this evidence to prove that many other people thought it was wrong. The old man’s punishment was too severe for what he did.  The author also said “You think kids get bullied? Well, unbelievable or not, old people get bullied," (FoxNews). The author uses this quote to let people know that senior citizens get bullied too. Arcese was just a man that wanted to use the bathroom and got punished for using it at the wrong time. These quotes prove that Arcese should not have gotten banned from the mall. He did something that just deserved a warning. They exaggerated with his punishment. Not only kids get punished for using the bathroom at the wrong time.
